Last week, Nissan’s global President and CEO, Ivan Espinosa, outlined the road map that will navigate the automaker’s future. And he’s nailed it.
Last Tuesday, Nissan’s global HQ in Yokohama hosted an important presentation.
Nissan showcased its future strategic direction to the world.
It involved presenting and announcing various future new models.
Under the title Mobility Intelligence for Everyday Life, Ivan shared with the world what Nissan will look like between now and 2030.
Everything Ivan and his colleagues presented last week was all about staying ahead of fast-changing new-car markets.
It was also about getting ahead of performance pressures, portfolio age, rising costs and complexities – all of which he addressed, and all of which is being tackled with his Re:Nissan plan, which makes Nissan more agile, leaner and more relevant to customers.
And it’s this key point about relevance that is the power stroke in this company engine he’s developed.
Along with focusing on major markets and market segments, he’s simplifying Nissan’s product range.
He’s also applying what’s clearly the right balance of software and AI to the company’s product portfolio.
And his pragmatic powertrain plan safely extends the bridge to longer-term electrification.
All of this is smart, practical and intelligent.
The cars might be the cool part, but here’s the most important part.
It’s abundantly clear that people, specifically customers, underpin the company’s new vision for Nissan and INFINITI.
It’s all about creating the types of vehicles they want, with careful consideration to how they will be powered, their levels of digital integration, where they will be made and where they will be sold.
Ivan Espinosa is an engineer. His background, prior to leading Nissan, was in product planning. He’s also a car lover, something that really shows in this new vision.
It shows not because he confirmed famous nameplates like Skyline are in the pipeline, but because his vision directly connects customers with the cars they want.
That might sound easy. But in global carmaking, it’s not.
And Nissan has got it right.
