Why trust and quality are interchangeable in manufacturing

All manufacturing industries, including Australia’s, need to deliver a degree of excellence.

People from all professional backgrounds visit our new-vehicle assembly lines in Melbourne. One topic they all ask about is quality, and the systems we use to achieve it.

ISO 9001, Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, Kaizen, Statistical Process Control (SPC), PPAP, Poka-yoke… and more. They are in everything we do, and they are all integrated into our secondary manufacturing programs for new cars.

Each system helps ensure the new cars that drive out of our factories are built to the right quality standards.

But new-car manufacturing quality isn’t confined to assembly lines. It’s also about the quality of components.

Modern cars are made up of more than 3,000 parts and assemblies. Automakers manufacture many of them in-house. Others are bought from specialist suppliers. Either way, they all have to meet strict quality standards.

The smallest details can have genuine impact. Adding an additional checking system to a component before it leaves its factory and heads to an assembly line can cement a car brand as a marque of quality. It can even avert disaster.

There are reasons why some cars still have as-new engine cylinder pressures – without ever being overhauled – after more than 500,000 kilometres of driving.

There are reasons why the dashboard toggle switches in a 1960s Jaguar E-Type sports car still feel solid and new when you push them.

And there are reasons why you don’t see rust on the chrome windscreen frame of an unrestored 1960s Riva speedboat.

Most of these reasons relate to quality, or levels of quality that are typically repeatable. And it’s this repeatability that creates trust.

Premcar’s procurement philosophy isn’t to aim for the cheapest.

This is because quality trumps price.

It’s a good policy. Because it creates and sustains high-quality – and trusted – manufacturing suppliers. It’s what every manufacturing economy needs, including Australia’s.

Aim high (in quality), not low (in price). It works.
